INDEPENDENT STUDY SPACES

Your time. Your learning. Your ambition.

Sixth Form brings greater independence, and with it, greater responsibility for how you use your time. At BOA Digital, independent study is an important part of the Sixth Form experience, giving students the space, technology and support to take greater ownership of their learning. It is also an opportunity to go further – exploring subjects beyond the classroom, pursuing individual interests and developing the depth of knowledge expected at post-16.

Our dedicated Sixth Form environment provides access to PCs for independent study, quiet spaces for focused work and areas where students can complete assignments, revise and prepare for upcoming lessons. Whether you’re researching a project, completing coursework, practising examination questions or preparing for your next lesson, there is a space to help you work effectively.

Independent study is part of your course

Imagine taking a device apart, diagnosing a fault, replacing components and bringing it back to life. Our proposed Tech Repair Lab will provide a practical environment where Sixth Form students can explore hardware, systems, troubleshooting and repair. Rather than simply learning how technology works, you’ll have opportunities to get inside it, investigate problems and develop practical technical expertise.

The space also has the potential to connect digital skills with sustainability. Students could explore how technology can be repaired, reused and given a second life, developing valuable technical and problem-solving skills while considering the environmental impact of our increasingly digital world.

Make your time count.

Success at Sixth Form is about what happens outside lessons as well as what happens inside them. Independent study periods give students valuable time to consolidate learning, revisit difficult concepts, complete wider reading and work towards individual academic goals.

Having dedicated study spaces means that non-contact time becomes a purposeful part of the Sixth Form day. Students develop the habits of organisation, time management, self-discipline and independent learning that are essential for successful post-16 study and provide important preparation for university, apprenticeships and employment.

Focus when you need to focus.

Sometimes the best place to learn is somewhere quiet. Dedicated quiet study areas provide an environment for students who need to concentrate away from the activity of collaborative and social spaces. They offer somewhere to read, revise, plan, write and think, giving students the flexibility to choose an environment that suits the task in front of them.

Alongside these quieter spaces, access to dedicated PCs means students can use digital resources throughout the Sixth Form day, supporting research, assignments, coursework, revision and project work.

As a specialist digital Sixth Form, technology supports students to study more effectively. Access to online learning platforms, digital resources and specialist software allows students to revisit learning, research independently and develop their work beyond the classroom. Technology becomes a tool for learning, not simply a device to work on.

Independent doesn't mean alone.

Greater independence doesn’t mean having to work everything out by yourself. Academic support is an important part of the BOA Digital Sixth Form experience. Teachers remain an important part of that journey, providing guidance, feedback and support when students need it – whether that’s revisiting something they haven’t understood, strengthening a particular area or being challenged to push themselves further.

Our approach combines greater independence with high expectations and appropriate support, helping students understand where they are, what they need to improve and what they can do next.

Develop the habits that take you further.

Independent study isn’t simply about completing more work. It’s about learning how to learn. Knowing when to ask for help, managing competing deadlines, breaking down a larger assignment, conducting effective research, responding to feedback and recognising when something needs more attention are all skills that become increasingly important after GCSEs.

By developing these habits throughout Sixth Form, students become more confident and self-reliant learners, better prepared for the greater independence expected at university, on a higher or degree apprenticeship and in the workplace. For students aiming for competitive destinations, independent study also provides opportunities for wider reading, independent research, portfolio development and preparation beyond the taught curriculum.

The right space. The right support. Your next step.

At BOA Digital, independent study is part of the rhythm of Sixth Form life. Students have the space to concentrate, technology to support their learning and academic support when they need it, while being trusted to take increasing responsibility for their own progress.

Because Sixth Form isn’t simply about being taught more. It’s about becoming the kind of learner who is ready for what comes next.
